Irvin C. Verkamp, 96 of Ferdinand died Saturday January 12, 2013 at his home in Ferdinand. He was born March 7, 1916 in Ferdinand to Frank & Elizabeth (Hoevels) Verkamp. He married Mary P. DeMuth on May 8, 1948 in St. Ferdinand Catholic Church. She preceded him in death on April 20, 2011.

Irvin retired from Best Chairs and was formerly an employee at Ferdinand Furniture. He served in the Army during WWII in the 38th Infantry Division. He served in the Pacific Theatre. He was awarded the purple heart. Irvin was a charter member of Ferdinand American Legion Post 124, and was a member of The Disabled American Veterans Post # 77. He was a lifelong member of St. Ferdinand Parish and its St. Joseph’s Sodality.

Surviving are four sons, Tom Verkamp and his wife Kathy of Mt. Vernon, In.; Mike Verkamp and his wife Betty of Jasper; Louie Verkamp and his wife Nancy of Ferdinand; and Andrew Verkamp and his wife Cheryl of Kyana, IN; and one daughter Margie Verkamp of Severn, MD. Ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren also survive. His caregivers, Home Instead, especially Susan. He was preceded in death by three brothers, James, Victor, and Richard Verkamp. One sister Rose Mary Schlachter.

Funeral services 10:00 a.m. Wednesday in St. Ferdinand Catholic Church, burial with military graveside services by Ferdinand Legion Post 124 in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday and 7:00 to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Becher Funeral Home, Ferdinand. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Ferdinand Parish or a favorite charity.
