Intoxicated man clocks 100 mph before crashing

A Jasper man was injured after wrecking his car near Northwood Drive after reaching speeds up to 100 mph Thursday evening.

According to authorities, William Sawyer, 48, of Pinehurst Drive, was westbound on Northwood Drive at about 10:22 p.m. when the accident occurred. Police report that Sawyer was driving in excess of 100 mph when he lost control of the 2013 Toyota Scion he was operating.

The car struck the curb on the north side of the road before going off the road and glancing off a tree. The Toyota stopped in a resident’s lawn.

Sawyer was taken to Memorial Hospital for injuries described as a broken left leg and broken right arm. Sawyer’s blood alcohol content was .157 percent.

He was charged with misdemeanor counts of operating while intoxicated and reckless driving. He was not lodged in the Dubois County Security Center but will be summoned into court due to the extent of his injuries.

The Dubois County Sheriff’s Department, Jasper Volunteer Fire Department and Memorial Hospital Emergency Medical Services assisted.
