Injured man pulls woman from burning vehicle
A French Lick man’s quick actions likely saved a woman’s life when her car caught fire after a head-on collision.
Jesse L. Roberts, 27, of Washington Street, French Lick, told police he was driving his 2001 Chevy Impala east on Cuzco Norton Road when he encountered a 1993 Buick Park Avenue in his lane. Roberts stated he attempted to veer into the the left lane to avoid the collision but was unable to and collided with the car.
Immediately after the collision the Buick caught on fire. Roberts was disoriented and was attempting to call 911 but stopped when he realized the driver, Norma G. Divine, 86, of Walnut Street, Huntingburg, was in imminent danger because of the fire.
Roberts yelled at Divine to get out of the vehicle but she was unable to free herself. He then reached into the burning vehicle and unbuckled Divine and pulled her to safety.
Deputies said this undoubtedly saved Divine’s life.
Roberts complained of back and knee pain. Divine suffered a spinal fracture and 13 rib fractures.
Both vehicles were considered total losses.
Dubois First Responders, Dubois Fire Department, Memorial Emergency Medical Services and a Uebelhor and Sons wrecker assisted at the scene.
