IDEM: Hoosier Hills Marina fire environmental impact minimal
The Indiana Department of Environmental Management reported the environmental impact of the fire at Hoosier Hills Marina was minimal.
The fire which ended with 11 boats destroyed — six sinking — and 11 others damaged is still under investigation by the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s office.
According to IDEM, most of the fuel in the boats involved in the February 19 fire was consumed by the fire.
Raw water samples taken the day of the fire and the next day showed the presence of some benzene. However, the amount found was below the Environmental Protection Agency’s Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL).
Patoka Lake Regional Water staff also took additional water samples on February 22, the results of which are pending.
