Huntingburg speed limits under review

Huntingburg – Speed limits in Huntingburg may be changing soon.

Currently the speed limit on U.S. 231 drops from 45 mph to 25 mph at 14th Street on the north side of town. The speed limit stays at 25 mph through the town until raising to 40 mph just south of Fourth Avenue on the south side of town. A study conducted by the Indiana Department of Transportation with input from the Huntingburg Police Department recommended a more gradual change in the speed limits through the city.

The Board of Public Works heard the results and recommendation of the study at Tuesday’s meeting. INDOT recommended the speed limits through the city on U.S. 231 be adjusted accordingly: on the north side of town the speed will drop from 45 mph to 40 mph north of 19th Street; drops to 30 north of 14th Street; to 25 mph just north of the railroad tracks past Ninth Street; it will remain 25 until between First and Second Avenue where it increases to 30 mph; and finally increases to 40 mph past Fourth Avenue.

The Board of Public Works and Safety will review the information recommended by INDOT and a vote to approve the new speed limits will probably be made at the next meeting. The new speed limit ordinance would then be presented to the Common Council for approval and could be done by November.
