Huntingburg Public Library will host IHS’s Basketball traveling exhibit

Huntingburg Public Library will host Going Pro, Basketball Origins in Indiana, one of the Indiana Historical Society’s (IHS’s) traveling exhibits, from Nov. 1 to Dec. 1. It will be on display at HPL, located at 419 N. Jackson Street.
The exhibit showcases the game of basketball as the sport became central to Indiana culture. Before national leagues with multimillion-dollar contracts, there were humble beginnings in gyms where players would “split up the nickels” after each game.
Visitors will learn about teams like the Em-Roes; the All American Red Heads, one of the nation’s first all-female barnstorming teams; the New York Renaissance, the pioneering all-Black team; and the Indiana Fever and the Pacers. With professional basketball events being played in Indiana since at least the 1920s, basketball remains a hallmark of Indiana culture.
