Huntingburg Mayor taking care of hospital grounds on his own time with donated equipment

“This is an investment for the city.” Mayor Marvin Belcher stated today in regards to why he is personally mowing the grounds of the St. Joseph Hospital. “If people want things done and no one is stepping up to do them, I’ll get it done.”

Belcher stated that Dr. Mahmood, one of the new owners of the hospital, asked him to take care of the grounds. Hopf Equipment then donated the tractor/mower and the gas for the job with the stipulation that Mayor Belcher would be using the equipment.

According to Janet Kemp another citizen of Huntingburg did volunteer to maintain the grounds. “We were approached by someone from the city. He said if we would get a mower and a Bush Hog he would take care of it, but Hopf wouldn’t let just anyone use their equipment.”

Belcher explained that the position of mayor has no set hours and in fact he works many odd hours for the city. If he is seen mowing the grass at the hospital during what many would consider normal business hours it should not be construed as him doing it on city time.

The delay on the doctors moving forward with the facility is based on getting funding for the business. “I can’t help it if some of the banks locally will not go the extra mile to help these folks out. I’ve got no cooperation and these doctors have no cooperation.”
