Huntingburg man killed in 3-vehicle crash on U.S. 231

Icy conditions contributed to a 3-vehicle accident that took a Huntingburg man’s life Monday evening on U.S. 231 in WITZ Bottoms.

Deputies and Huntingburg officers were dispatched to the accident around 7 p.m. Witnesses told police that a 2001 Chevrolet Tracker driven by Sameer C. Metha, 39, of Huntingburg, was southbound on U.S. 231 south of Witz Road when it hit a patch of ice on the bridge and lost control. The Tracker slid into the oncoming lane of traffic and collided head-on with a 2014 Toyota Tundra driven by Jeremy Brewer, 36, of Jasper.

After the initial collision, a 2008 Chevrolet Impala driven by Michale Carie collided with the rear of the Toyota.

The Jasper Fire Department had to extricate all three drivers from their vehicles.

Metha succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Brewer’s leg was injured, and he was taken to Memorial Hospital by ambulance. Carie did not complain of any injuries.

All three vehicles were totaled in the accident.

Memorial Hospital Emergency Medical Services, Jasper First Responders, Huntingburg First Responders, Jasper Fire Department, Jasper and Huntingburg police departments and wreckers from Luegers and Uebelhor and Sons assisted at the scene.

The accident remains under investigation.
