Huntingburg officers arrested a Huntingburg man for theft after responding to a complaint of unusual activities at a storage rental business Wednesday morning.

According to police, they were called to B&P Rentals at the corner of 8th and Van Buren streets at about 6:45 a.m.

The caller said they observed several people going into a building and felt the activity needed checked.

Upon arrival, Officer Paul Lehr and Asst. Chief Ronnie Bowman heard people moving around inside the storage building, however, they would not open the door to the unit. The two then sat back on the location for about 15 minutes until three of the occupants exited the building.

Officers stopped them and were advised that Joshua R. Cummins, 27, of Huntingburg, was still inside. According to police, they had been trying to locate Cummins for questioning about recent thefts throughout the town.

Bowman said that the Huntingburg Police Department has fielded about six reports of thefts of items from residents since last week.

The Huntingburg officers were joined by deputies from the Dubois County Sheriff’s Department and they entered the building. Inside, Cummins was found on the floor and several hunting items were located in the building. Cummins acknowledge the items did not belong to him, according to police.

Police took Cummins into custody and transported him to the police station for questioning.

Cummins spoke with officers briefly before he stopped answering questions.

Officers made contact with a theft victim from this past weekend who was able to positively identify an item found with Cummins this morning.

The victim also identified a crossbow Cummins allegedly stole and then sold. Officers recovered the crossbow earlier in the week with the assistance of the Indiana State Police.

Cummins was charged with two counts of Class A misdemeanor theft. He was lodged in the Dubois County Security Center.
