Huntingburg home damaged in upstairs fire

A fire in an upstairs room has rendered a house on Jackson Street in Huntingburg temporarily uninhabitable.

The Huntingburg Fire Department responded to the fire after receiving a call about smoke and flames coming from the upstairs of the 417 Jackson Street home at about 6:10 p.m. Tuesday.

When firefighters entered the unoccupied home, they were met by the residents’ dog, which was safely removed, Huntingburg Fire Chief Donnie Heim said.

Though the fire was extinguished before it spread to the rest of the house, the home does have smoke and water damage. According to Heim, utilities have been shut off to the home, and the damages will have to be repaired before the residents can return.

Heim added that the residents have a place to stay while clean-up and repairs are completed on the home.

In all, 20 firefighters responded to the home with two pumper trucks and were on the scene until about 9:27 p.m. Huntingburg Utilities responded to the scene as well.

Heim said there was ice everywhere when firefighters were done at the scene, but there were no other issues created by the frigid temperatures.

At this time the fire is still under investigation to determine the cause.
