Humane Society to find forever home for Walmart cats

Jasper — The Dubois County Humane Society, with help from Walmart, will find permanent homes for the feral cats currently living in the 4000 block of N. Newton Street in Jasper.

DCHS will begin to implement a plan this weekend to humanely capture and relocate the feral cats.

Starting today, DCHS will begin controlled feedings for several days. Walmart will donate all the food needed for the controlled feeding of the cats.

The controlled feedings will isolate the feedings to a specific area and prepare for the capture and transfer of the cats during the following week.

“We respectfully request that any public feeding of the cats cease immediately in order for this transfer to be successful,” Walmart representatives asked in a press release. “The open dumping of food on private property and the feeding of feral cats are both banned by local ordinance and will be enforced by local law enforcement.”

“As part of our mission to reduce pet overpopulation and find loving homes for animals, DCHS is happy to provide assistance to our local Walmart store to humanely capture and relocate them to a better environment,” said Andrea Hedinger, President of the Board of  Directors of the Dubois County Humane Society.

Once the cats are safely transferred into the care of DCHS, they will be evaluated by a veterinarian, receive all vaccinations, spayed or neutered, and returned to the Dubois County Humane Society for relocation or adoption. Walmart will pay the cost of all veterinary exams and procedures.

“We have heard from many of our customers interested in adopting one of the Jasper cats and we want to make the process easy to find new homes for the cats, so we will pay their adoption fees.” Jamie Tylka, Jasper Walmart Store Manager said. “Customer service and customer safety are number one and this is another way we can serve our customers.”

If anyone is interested in adopting one of these cats once they are available. Please contact DCHS by email at dcshmail@yahoo.com or by private Facebook message to begin the adoption process. DCHS is proud to have placed 204 animals into forever homes in 2013 and our adoption count is 165 so far in 2014.

Walmart will continue to work closely with DCHS and utilize DCHS’s expertise in animal care for any future needs.
