Horses killed and driver injured in crash

Huntingburg–A driver was injured when he struck a pair of horses on Highway 64 near the Huntingburg Golf Course early Thursday morning.

According to police, they were called to the incident near County Road 400 West at about 3:40 a.m. When they arrived, officers found a green pickup truck with heavy damage to its front end and a shattered windshield.

The driver declined emergency medical services, but told responders he had pain in his hands, shoulders, and face. Officers observed the driver had multiple small cuts on his hands from the windshield shattering on impact. The officers also found one horse deceased and another incapacitated due to its injuries. It subsequently had to be euthanized.

During the investigation, police received a report from another driver regarding a herd of horses west of the incident. Deputies with the Dubois County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene to assist and the owner of the horses was notified of the situation. During the response one horse was captured, but four remained at large until about two hours later when they returned to the intersection, police said.

Police were assisted by Sternbergs who towed the vehicle from the scene; INDOT took possession of the deceased horses; and the Huntingburg Fire Department cleared the roadway of debris.
