Homiletics refresher workshop for deacons planned at Saint Meinrad

A homiletics refresher workshop for deacons will be held on October 16–17, 2026, at Saint Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology, St. Meinrad, IN.

Deacon Rick Wagner, former director of Saint Meinrad’s Permanent Deacon Formation Program, will lead the workshop entitled “Sharing Our Story: A Homiletics Refresher for Deacons.” The workshop is designed to provide practical ways for deacons to inspire, motivate, and instruct through their preaching.

Deacons are called to preach beyond the ambo, commissioning the faithful as preachers of the Good News as well. As storytellers, they share the sacramental moments, people, and lessons of their lives. In doing so, they can plant seeds of hope and encourage others to share their own stories.

Participants will explore how their personal faith stories can become powerful witnesses when framed within the context of the readings of the Mass. Because no one else has lived their life or experienced Jesus in exactly the same way, each deacon has a unique story to share.

The workshop will begin Friday evening after dinner and conclude Saturday afternoon. Meals will be provided for Friday dinner and Saturday breakfast and lunch. A social hour with drinks and snacks will follow Friday evening’s presentation.

The cost is $295 for a single room and $320 for a double room. Participants may extend their stay through Sunday, October 18, for an additional cost.
