Home Run Derby

Zane Bawel, 8, kept his eye on the ball as he socked one over the fence Thursday afternoon at the Jasper Sports Complex. Zane and about 30 other boys took part in the annual home run derby put on by the Jasper Parks and Recreation Department. Photos by Matthew Crane.
Carter Himsel, 10, took a swat at the ball during his turn. Each boy was given 10 hits and each one over the fence counted for their tally to be named Home Run Derby champion. Former and current Jasper High School baseball players provided the pitching and fielding in the park.
The home run derby is set up in three divisions depending on age. While one division was smacking them over the fence, boys in the other two divisions shagged balls while waiting for their turns.
Graham Werner, 10, peered through the fence under the advertising banner to watch the next batter hit.
Equipment bags waited in the nearby dugout.
