Holland home destroyed in overnight fire
Holland — A fire that destroyed a home and garage south of Holland overnight left two families devastated.
Everything the two families owned was lost in the fire that engulfed and destroyed the residence belonging to Curtis Hubster at 9554 S. 720W. A passerby reported the fire at about 2:48 a.m., according to Holland Volunteer Fire Chief Adam Chambers. No one was home at the time of the fire.
According to Chambers, the home was engulfed in flames when units from Holland pulled on scene. A St. Henry Volunteer Fire Department tanker was also called to assist.
Firefighters put out flames in surrounding trees and saved an outbuilding east of the house. Siding on a neighbors home was damaged by heat from the fire.
Five trucks and 13 firefighters from the Holland Volunteer Fire Department were on the scene for over three hours. St. Henry sent a tanker and six firefighters to assist.
The Dubois County Sheriff’s Department, Memorial Hospital Emergency Medical Services and a Vectren utility crew also assisted.
The cause of the fire has not been determined. A representative of the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office arrived on scene at about 11:30 a.m. to investigate the cause of the fire and he ruled it undetermined at this time due to the extensive damage. The insurance company will also be conducting an investigation into the fire.
Chambers did report the occupants of the home would need several items including back to school supplies and backpacks. A list of clothing sizes for men, women, and children is at the bottom of this story.
Items can be dropped off at a bin behind the Holland United Methodist Church, 205 N. Second Ave.
The American Red Cross is meeting with the family to find accommodations for them at this time.
