Historical Society to present Buckingham’s Base Line information

The Dubois County Historical Society will host a presentation about Buckingham’s Base Line at its Spring Meeting on Thursday, March 23, 2016, at the Dubois County Museum, 2704 N. Newton St., Jasper, Indiana.

The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. and includes a buffet dinner, business meeting, an election of officers and a program.

Ken Brosmer, the Dubois County Surveyor, will explain the importance of the Buckingham Base Line in determining the location of townships which, in turn, led to a reliable method of describing property for sale. The Buckingham Base Line ran through Dubois County and was named for Surveyor Ebenezer Buckingham, Jr. who established this primary east-west survey line in 1804.

A state historic marker about the Buckingham Base Line once stood on Highway 231 between Jasper and Haysville. The marker was destroyed in a car accident and has not been replaced. The Dubois County Historical Society wants to determine if there is interest in replacing this historic marker.
