Hilbert Herman Schnell, 95, of Jasper, passed away at 12:05 a.m. on Sunday, April 5, 2015, at home.

Hilbert was born on May 3, 1919 to Jacob and Thresia (Hauser) Schnell. He married Bernadine Hopf on May 7, 1949 in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Jasper.

Hilbert was an Army veteran who served in World War II. He spent one and a half years in South America guarding the Panama Canal. He then served in combat duty in the countries of England, France, Belgium, and Germany through the end of the war. He was a witness to the concentration camps in Germany.

Hilbert retired from JOFCO where he had worked for over 38 years.

He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Jasper and their Holy Name Society. He was a member of the Jasper VFW Post #673.

He enjoyed working outdoors, gardening, and building wood furniture. He prided himself on his ability to fix things. He also enjoyed music and dancing at the VFW.

He is survived by his wife, Bernadine Schnell; three daughters; Jan Hasenour and her husband Ron of Jasper, Darlene Schreiner and her husband Kent of Jasper and Cheryl Evans and her husband Chris of Middletown, Ind.; two sons, James Schnell and Larry Schnell, both of Jasper; eight grandchildren and three step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren; one brother, Arthur J. Schnell.

Preceding him in death were three sisters, Margaret Vogler, Marie Mundy, and Lorena Gutgsell; and two brothers, Anthony Schnell and Edwin Schnell.

Funeral services for Hilbert H. Schnell will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, April 10, 2015, at Holy Family Catholic Church, with burial to follow in Fairview Cemetery in Jasper. The Jasper VFW Post #673 will conduct military gravesite rites.

Friends may call from 2:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 9, 2015, at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper. The Holy Family Parish will pray the rosary at 1:45 p.m.
