Herbert O. “Boots” Schwenk, age 87 of Ireland, passed away at 5:15 p.m., Thursday (July 12, 2012) at home with his children and his sister.
He was born in Ireland, Indiana on August 2, 1924 to Fintan and Bertha (Burger) Schwenk. He married Mary Ann Hoffman on April 8, 1947 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper. She preceded him in death on January 5, 1993.
Herbert was a lifetime farmer. He attended school at Ireland. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ireland, St. Joseph Society, St. Vincent de Paul Society, Ireland Sportsman Club, National Farmers Organization, the Democratic Party, and a lifetime member of the Ireland Knights of Columbus. He was also the school board trustee for the Ireland High School, was the Madison Township trustee, and was an election poll worker at the Ireland Poll.
He received the Heritage Farm Award from Farm Credit Services in 2008. He and his family received recognition from the State Knights of Columbus and received the family distinction award for service to the church and the community.
He was an avid Cincinnati Reds, Indiana University, Jasper Wildcat, and Ireland Spuds Fan. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing cards, making wine, butchering, and gardening.

Funeral services for Herbert O. “Boots” Schwenk will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday (July 16, 2012) at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ireland, with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
Friends may call from Noon until 8:00 p.m. on Sunday (July 15, 2012) at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper.
