The City of Huntingburg has teamed up with the Dubois County Humane Society and ACT of Dubois County to raise $5,000 to pay for vet care, spay/neuter, and foster care needs of the 28 dogs and puppies seized from a puppy mill in Huntingburg.

On Friday, April 25th, after years of investigations, representatives from the Dubois County Humane Society, ACT of Dubois County, and the Huntingburg Police Department were able to successfully remove 28 dogs from a home at 609 N. Washington Street.

The home belongs to Mary K. Burch, 66, who currently faces misdemeanor charges of animal neglect. During the investigation, authorities found 37 dogs, including nine deceased dogs, at the home.

Due to the ongoing investigation, all the remaining dogs remain in the care of DCHS and ACT. However, according to Andrea Hedinger of the Dubois County Humane Society, all but three of the dogs the humane society took in have been placed in foster homes.

According to Hedinger, many people have stepped forward assist in the society’s endeavors. and the puppies and dogs are thriving at the shelters or foster homes. “The poor things [dogs] were going to the bathroom in their food bowls when we first receive them because they knew no different,” she explained.

“DCHS has been very proud of the joint effort between the City of Huntingburg, ACT of Dubois County, and Dubois County Humane,” Hedinger said. “We are seeking donations to help defray the cost of their medial care, which will include spay/neutering to end their life of breeding and being a profit center.”

In addition to using the funds to care for the puppies from this incident, the humane society will also be establishing an animal welfare fund to be used in future large scale abuse/neglect cases.
