Habitat for Humanity grand opening and ground breaking

Jasper — Habitat for Humanity of Dubois County will break ground on its 12th home on Saturday, June 1.

This day will also feature the Grand Re-Opening of Habitat’s ReStore at its new location – both located at 4232 South County Road 170 East – just north of Bretzville. This location, which is on the east side of Highway 162 near the Dubois County 4-H Fairgrounds, answered two desperate needs for the Habitat organization as it provides larger space for the ReStore and land for a home for the Brenda Messmer family.

The Grand ReStore Re-Opening, beginning at 9:00 a.m., will include a cook-out at noon sponsored by United Parcel Service (UPS), a live band, balloon artists, face-painting, and games. The day’s events will conclude with the ground-breaking ceremony at 3:00 p.m., which will include a blessing and prayer by Fr. Jack Durcholz of St. Ferdinand Church, recognizing the beginning of the home construction for this family in need.

Melissa Baxter, Habitat’s Executive Director, stated, “We are so very ready to make this first step toward placing the Messmer family in a new home and to welcome the community to our new ReStore and Habitat for Humanity office. Both events are long in coming but so worth the wait. We welcome and encourage everyone to come out and shop on June 1st, enjoy good food and entertainment, and learn more about how our Habitat volunteers are working to eliminate poverty housing in Dubois County.”

Habitat for Humanity of Dubois County was founded 17 years ago and has helped twelve local families by partnering with them to build simple, decent housing. Funding is received from individual and corporate donors as well as from the ReStore, which is Habitat’s retail business that sells new and gently used home improvement items, furniture, decorations, etc. at discounted prices.

The ReStore is open to the public Wednesday – Friday 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., and Saturday 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. All products in the ReStore have been donated by local individuals, businesses, and manufacturers.
