Gymnasium finally moving forward
Greater Jasper Consolidated School Superintendent Dr. Jerrill Vandeventer didn’t have much to say on the prospect the school board could be facing another challenge from the Southwestern Indiana Building and Construction Trades Council over the wage scale hearing held in March. He was just happy to finally be moving forward with the board’s decision to accept the bids for the construction of the new Jasper High School Gymnasium.
“We are very close to a year since our gym collapsed,” Vandeventer said, “I’m so pleased that the board has taken the initiative to approve those bids, it’s just long overdue.”
Vandeventer stated the estimated bid total of over $11 million is within the parameters set by German American Insurance. “This corporation is expecting this project to be totally funded by the insurance company.”
At the special meeting George Link with VPS Architecture presented the bids his firm was recommending the school board accept for the construction of the gymnasium. Link made the following recommendations:
- General construction contract be awarded to Empire for the base bid of $8,606,650 along with the installation of terrazzo into the cafeteria area in lieu of linolium for $22,000 and the installation of polished concrete in lieu of linolium in the public corridors for an additional $7000.
- Mechanical contract be awarded to HFI for 1,679,000
- Electrical contract be awarded to Weyer Electric for $1,153,888
Total award amount: $11,439,539
The timeline given was to have a substantial amount finished for the graduation of 2013. Link stated this is still the goal.
