Guidelines for being prepared for driving in severe weather

The Dubois County Sheriff’s Department issued a warning to the public about the upcoming severe weather.

When traveling on the highways or county roads during severe weather authorities are reminding folks to:

  • Slow down. Speed is often the first contributing factor in a crash.
  • Allow extra time.
  • Ensure you windshield and windows are clear of snow and ice.
  • Accelerate and decelerate slowly to allow for maximum traction.
  • Always wear a seatbelt.
  • Pack a blanket and proper cold weather gear like extra food and water in case your vehicle becomes stuck or stranded.
  • Plan your route and be sure you know where you are.

According to authorities, if you are involved in an accident, contact your local law enforcement or 9-1-1. Vehicle accidents involving property damage or more than one vehicle must be reported.

Single vehicle slide-offs without any property damage are not required to be reported to law enforcement. Drivers can contact wreckers on their own for assistance.

When in doubt, don’t hesitate to call for local law enforcement.
