Gregory J. “Greg” Vogler, 60, of Downers Grove, Illinois, formerly of Jasper, Indiana passed away on Friday, September 26, 2014, at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois.
Greg was born on March 15, 1954 to Martin and Louise (Hopf) Vogler. He married Maria Schuler on July 7, 1979.
Greg attended Jasper High School (Class of 1972) and was honored as an outstanding alumnus in 2014.
Greg earned a Bachelor of Science in Engineering, with honors, from Purdue University in 1977, and earned his JD, with honors, from DePaul College of Law in 1984.
In addition to serving on DePaul University Dean’s Council and DePaul University’s Intellectual Property Advisory Board, Greg received The Outstanding Service to DePaul University Award in 2007. In 1988, Greg co-founded McAndrews, Held & Malloy, where he specialized in patent, trade secret and trademark litigation. Greg had a very successful career as a patent litigator and had been named a “Leading Lawyer in IP Law” by the Leading Lawyers Network and had received the Chicago Top Lawyers Award, Illinois Top Lawyers Award, Illinois Super Lawyers Award, and National Leading Lawyers in IP Award.
Greg’s community service included serving as an elected commissioner in Downers Grove, as Chairman of the Downers Grove Heritage Festival, as Chairman of the Downers Grove Zoning Commission, and as Chairman of the Downers Grove High School Building Referendum and Library Addition Referendum. Greg also served on the Board of Directors of the local YMCA. Greg’s special service to women’s issues included serving on the Board of Directors for Downers Grove Care and Counseling Center, and as founder of Mary Jane’s Hope, a foundation devoted to helping abused women and children.
Greg’s interests and hobbies over the years included serving as president and coach of the Downers Grove Nomads Youth Basketball Club, as president of the Downers Grove Roadrunners Youth Soccer Club, and as founder and coach of St. Mary’s Grade School Cross-Country program.
He is survived by his wife, Maria Vogler of Chicago, Ill.; three sons, Nathan Vogler of Washington D.C.;, Drew Vogler of Indianapolis, and Alex Vogler of West Lafayette, Ind.; seven sisters, Linda Giesler of Jasper, Georgina Rowland of Bargersville, Ind., Carol Schmitt, and her husband, Mike, of Ireland, Nancy Foerster of Chicago, Ill., Judy Steiner, and her husband, Tom, Carmel, Ind., Chris Harmon, and her husband, Dave, Albuquerque, N.M., and Kathy Whitten of San Diego, Cali.; four brothers, Rev. Ken Vogler of Albuquerque, N.M., Bill Vogler of Sanibel, Fla., Rich Vogler, and his wife Wai Ling, of Captain Cook, Hawaii, and Tony Vogler, and his wife Kathy, of Jasper; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death are one sister, Mary Jane Cordon, and one brother Donald “Marty” Vogler.
Funeral services for Gregory J. “Greg” Vogler will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Jasper, with burial to follow in Shiloh cemetery.
Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. until the 12:00 p.m. service time on Saturday at the church.
