Grant helps Jasper Police upgrade truth verification technology

Through a special grant from Operation Underground Railroad (OUR), the Jasper Police Department will upgrade its computerized voice stress analyzer (CVSA).

Provided through the company, National Institute of Truth Verification Federal Services (NITV), the department will update its current CVSA to the most recent system for use in the variety of crimes the department investigates.

Since 1988, NITV Federal Services has provided truth verification technology and services for law enforcement, and now those services are being used by the military in the field.

Jasper Police Department investigates a wide variety of criminal acts, including homicides, rapes, child molestation, child exploitation, child pornography, human trafficking, identity deception, and thefts.

“We have utilized the NITV Federal Services CVSA tool’s technology to assist us with these types of investigations since 1990,” said Detective Sgt Jeremy Brescher.

Brescher pointed out that since the Jasper Police Department detectives became task force members in the Indiana Internet Crimes Against Children, these types of investigations have increased.

“With the uptick in investigations and better technology available, we felt there was a need to upgrade our current CVSA II to a CVSA III,” he said in a press release about the grant.

Jasper Police Department is one of about 2,800 local, state, federal, and international law enforcement agencies that utilize this technology. They have two detectives who are trained as advanced examiners in using the investigative tool.

To purchase the new equipment, the department applied for and was awarded a grant of $7,015.50 from OUR Rescue to assist with purchasing the new CVSA III. Operation Underground Railroad is a nonprofit organization dedicated to combating child sexual exploitation and human trafficking. “JPD would like to thank O.U.R. Rescue for their generous donation,” the department said in a press release. “We encourage anyone interested in their mission to visit their website at OURRESCUE.ORG.”
