Gov. Daniels speaks at annual Jasper Chamber “Breakfast”
The Jasper Chamber Annual Luncheon was held yesterday at the Jasper Inn; however this year’s luncheon was a breakfast due to a special guest. The Chamber accommodated Governor Mitch Daniels schedule so he could present a “Report to the Taxpayers – 2011” to the crowded venue.
Daniels remarks included praise for the community’s values and strength. His presentation detailed spending by the state and how his basic business practices of spending less than you earn has increased the state’s budget since he has taken office despite the current recession. A couple of pot shots at Illinois as well as the Governor’s charismatic personality enlivened the topic.
Before Daniels took the podium outgoing Chamber President Diane Schwenk presented the “2011 President’s Community Excellence Award” to Bernie Vogler.
Mr. Vogler was nominated for his leadership roles in many community events and organizations. These include:
- Leading role in the Cabby O’neal Gymnasium
- President Dubois County Museum
- Founder of the first Downtown Jasper Beautification
- Easter Seals President
- One of the Founders of the Strassenfest
The list goes on and confirms that Mr. Volger’s contributions to the community are to such a depth as many fine things in Jasper would not be available without his talents and drive.
Vogler was surprised by the nomination and at times overwhelmed during his acceptance speech. He acknowledged his roots in the community and his family roots in his volunteerism efforts and achievements. “My dad was a great donor to his church and his community and I got it from him. I just love trying to make Dubois County and Jasper a better place to live.”
Mr. Vogler was accompanied by his wife Donna. He has two sons, Chris and Andy Vogler, and two daughters, Audrey Seger and Annette Durcholz. He also has eleven grandchildren.
Jolee Moffett of Jasper’s Two Sign Guys was announced as the new Jasper Chamber President. She gave a short acceptance speech thanking the Chamber Board for allowing her the opportunity to take a greater role in the business community of Jasper.
Ms. Moffett briefly spoke of current and future projects the Chamber is involved in. The Chamber is heavily involved in the Hometown Competitiveness Program. A new goal by the Chamber is to visit with each of its current 395 members over the next year. Moffett explained she and the Chamber are dedicated to customer service and want to extend the best service to its members.
She summed up by stating, “I really encourage you guys to get involved with us. Attend a timeout from business. Go to a new business ribbon cutting. Socialize at a Riverwalk Concert. We are building and restoring our community together and it’s together that we can continue to grow Jasper while paying tribute to its history.”
