GJCS celebrating tomatoes for Indiana Food Day
Greater Jasper Consolidated Schools will be hosting an Indiana Food Day Celebration at Jasper Middle School on Thursday, October 15th, 2026.
Jasper Middle School students can ask questions and learn interesting facts about Indiana-grown fruits, vegetables, and proteins. Representatives from Indiana Farmwise, the Indiana Dairy Association, the Indiana Department of Agriculture, Slaughter Orchard and Cidery, Tell City Pretzels, Fischer Farms, Red Gold, and Sodexo will participate in the event.
Students will have the pleasure of sampling recipes using these local Indiana producers and learning more about agriculture.
Indiana ranks first in commercial duck, popcorn and gourd production. Indiana ranks second in pumpkin production, third in spearmint and eggs, and fifth in the nation for corn and hog production.
This is the 14th year schools in Indiana take time to highlight Indiana Grown foods and the second year the celebration is held at the school. This year in Indiana, tomatoes are the focus of fun and education. Students will have the opportunity to check in with each vendor and complete a bingo-style card as they make their rounds.
Greater Jasper Consolidated Schools are in their second year of a growing Farm to School program. Students on campus receive agricultural education in grades Kindergarten through 12th grade and, at multiple levels, have the opportunity to participate in on-campus gardening. Greater Jasper Consolidated Schools is currently working to obtain additional state and federal funding to expand the number of local foods served to students daily.
