Girls on the Run to host 5k Saturday
Update: Despite the rainy forecast, the Girls on the Run 5k Celebration WILL take place tomorrow, Saturday, April 30th, at Jasper Middle School.
Race Registration, Happy Hair, Photo Booth, Sign-making, the Bake Sale and all the pre-race activities will take place inside the school’s Black Gymnasium from 8:00-8:45 AM. Please park on the North side of the school and enter through the main gymnasium entrance.
Near 9:00 a.m., we will assess the weather situation to decide whether it is safe for us to continue with the 5k as planned. If at that time, it is raining steadily or if threatening weather in the area, we will plan to continue the GOTR Celebration without the 5k. Regardless of the weather, we will still take the opportunity to acknowledge the accomplishments of our girls, coaches and all who have played a special role in our 2016 Spring Girls on the Run program.
Girls on the Run serving Dubois County will host its end-of-season 5k event on Saturday, April 30, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. at Jasper Middle School.
Girls on the Run is a physical-activity based, positive youth development (PA-PYD) program that prepares 3rd to 5th grade girls for a 5k event along with helping them develop key life skills. The program takes place in 49 states and the District of Columbia and has been inspiring girls to recognize their limitless potential for 20 years.
Volunteer-led teams meet twice a week throughout the season and participate in lessons that prepare the girls for a 5k event, foster the girls’ confidence, help them build connections with their peers and encourage meaningful contribution to their community through a service project. 124 girls from Dubois County completed the Girls on the Run program this season.
The celebratory 5k is a noncompetitive event that provides girls with a goal to work toward during the season and shows them that the finish line is just the beginning when it comes to going after their dreams.
Girls on the Run hosts the largest 5k series in the United States by number of events with 359 events across the country last year. Last season’s Dubois County 5k event held in conjunction with the Wildcat Runaway put on by the Jasper Cross Country Boosters had 400 participants, including girls in the program, their running buddies and other community members.
The Dubois County area 5k event is open to the public and will be held at Jasper Middle School on April 30, 2016. The cost to participate is $20 and includes the event fee and event shirt (while supplies last) as well as race refreshments.
Packet pick up will be on the day of the race (4/30) at Jasper Middle School beginning at 8:00 a.m. The event will begin at 9:00 a.m. on April 30th at Jasper Middle School, and early arrival is suggested.
