Gerald “Jerry” Gutzweiler, 87, Jasper
Gerald “Jerry” Gutzweiler, 87, of Jasper, passed away at 11:07 p.m. on Saturday, October 3, 2020, at home.
Jerry was born in Jasper on November 16, 1932, to Bernie and Albertine “Dickie” Gutzweiler. He married Doris V. Winkler on February 6, 1954, in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper. She preceded him in death on April 20, 2019.
Jerry was a graduate of the Jasper High School Class of 1950, and a graduate of the Lockyear Business College in 1952. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of the American Legion Post #147. Jerry and his wife Doris worked together from 1956 to 1996. They owned and operated the Astra Theater in Jasper, which he purchased in 1966. He also owned Jerry’s Sundries which he purchased in 1956, Gambles Hardware that he started in 1961, and the Tivoli Theater in Jasper, which he purchased in 1966 and was closed after a fire in 1970 that also claimed the life of his sister Margaret Ann Gutzweiler.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper, the Jasper Knights of Columbus, and the Jasper Moose Lodge. He served on the Jasper Board of Zoning Appeals from 1972 to 1980, and was the director of the Indiana Theatre Owners Association from 1988 to 1992.
He enjoyed fishing, cooking, and spending time with friends and family.
He is survived by one daughter, Ann Burger (Al) of Jasper; two grandchildren, Luke Ward and Stacey Hart-Epley; two great-grandchildren, Wyatt Ward and Virginia Epley.
Preceding him in death besides his wife was a sister, Beverly Joyce Gutzweiler, who died in infancy and his sister, Margaret Ann Gutzweiler.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Gerald “Jerry ” Gutzweiler will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 8, 2020, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper, with burial to follow in Fairview Cemetery in Jasper. The American Legion Post #147 will conduct military graveside rites.
A visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. Mass time at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper. Masks and social distancing will be required for the visitation and Mass.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church or a favorite charity.

Ann, Sad to hear about your Dad. Please accept my sincere condolences and heartfelt sympathy in your loss. As you know, a few months ago your Dad, you and Al and I enjoyed a nice seafood dinner together in Bradenton, Florida. Your dad has been a good friend for many years. I will miss our conversations on the phone. God Bless you and all members of your family.
Sorry to read that Jerry has passed. He was a “former” growing up friend of mine, and it has
been over 70 years since I have seen him. Jerry was always a fun-loving guy in everything he did, and we really had some good times together, going to see ballgames or playing poker. I know that he will be missed by all in the Family, and my thoughts and prayers are with you. Just remember, Ann, you will always have the Memories, they can’t take those away from you.
