Frank Joseph “Jackson” Meyer, 93, Ferdinand

Frank Joseph “Jackson” Meyer, 93, of Ferdinand, passed away Sunday, December 23, 2018, at Scenic Hills Care Center in Ferdinand.

He was born February 10, 1925, in Ferdinand to Frank H. & Frances (Eversman) Meyer. He was united in marriage to Ardella Begle on May 1, 1948 in St. Ferdinand Catholic Church, she preceded him in death on August 9, 2010.

Jackson rode the “Ferdy Flyer” to Huntingburg High School, of which he graduated in 1943. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran serving as a sergeant and squad leader in the 103^rd Division. He served in southern Germany during the war and was stationed in Italy after the war ended.  

He was employed at Ferdinand Furniture and later was a municipal lineman, water maintenance for 37 years in the town of Ferdinand. He was a member of the Ferdinand Volunteer Fire Department for 42 years and was chief for several years.

He played baseball with the Ferdinand Pirates, Ferdinand Cardinals, and St. Henry baseball league. He played liniment league softball as well. He worked as a bouncer at Palm Gardens in the 1950’s.

Jackson was a member of the Ferdinand Town Board from 1988 to 1992. He was a member of Christ the King Parish, St. Ferdinand Church, Ferdinand American Legion Post 124, Huntingburg V.F.W. Post 2366. He participated in the Southern Indiana Honor Flight in 2015 and was a torchbearer for the Bi-centennial Relay in 2016.

In retirement, he enjoyed spending time developing “Jackson’s Hole” and attending his grandchildren’s sporting events. Jackson was a member of the former Ferdinand Development Corporation.

Surviving are three daughters, Carole (Mike) Rohleder, Mary Lou Luebbehusen, both of Ferdinand and Sherry (Kerry) Pfaff of Huntingburg; two sons, Larry (Kathy) Meyer and Jim (Vicki) Meyer, both of Ferdinand; one sister-in-law, Doris Meyer of Celestine; 12 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by brothers, Herbert and Elmer Meyer, sisters, Theresa Meyer and Florentine Lasher, and sons-in law, Wayne Schaefer in 1975 and Roman “Hooker” Luebbehusen in 1997.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, December 29, 2018 in St. Ferdinand Catholic Church, burial in the church cemetery following. Ferdinand Legion Post 124 will conduct military graveside rites. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 7:00 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Becher Funeral Home in Ferdinand.
