On Tuesday Mayor Terry Seitz announced the appointment of former Jasper Common Council member, Renee Kabrick, as city attorney effective July 1.

“I believe with nearly 20 years of experience as a practicing attorney,” Seitz said, “Renee is equipped to lead our Law Department. Plus, her perspective as a former Jasper elected official and a desire to return to her hometown are two unique attributes which will be of great benefit to our community.”

Kabrick is a 1985 graduate of Jasper High School, received a degree in finance from Indiana University and returned to Jasper to work at Aristokraft (now Masterbrand). In 1991 she decided to pursue a law degree from the IU School of Law in Indianapolis and upon graduation in 1994 she practiced in the area of insurance defense at the Carmel, Indiana, law firm of Jennings Taylor Wheeler & Bouwkamp, P.C.

In 1997, her family returned to Jasper once again and she began working for the law firm of Birk & Birk, where she practiced in several areas, focusing on insurance defense, probate and estate planning and collections. In 2003, she accepted a position with the Indianapolis law firm of Duffin & Hash, LLP, where she has continued to practice, primarily in the area of insurance defense.

While living in Jasper from 1997-2006, Kabrick was a member of the Board of Directors of Southwest Indiana Chapter of the Indiana University Alumni Association and a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She was a member of the Dubois County Bar Association having served as Vice-President in 2000. In addition, in 2003 she was elected to the Jasper Common Council and served until she relocated.

Currently, Kabrick lives in Bloomington with her husband and their four children. As part of her duties she will relocate to Jasper.

“Through life’s pathways, my family and I have had the opportunity to reside in several different communities in Indiana, yet Jasper has always remained our home and we are very excited to return to our friends and family in the area.” said Kabrick. “I anxiously await the opportunity to work with Mayor Seitz and the rest of the city personnel to continue the tradition of excellence for which Jasper is known.”

Mayor Seitz will request Kabrick’s appointment be placed on the agenda for the June meetings of the Utility Service Board and Common Council.
