Ferdinand-based Universal Design Associates, Inc., has received the 2012 “Excellence in Commercial Masonry & Hardscape/Landscape” Award from The Indiana Concrete Masonry Association, Midwest Masonry Council, and International Masonry Institute, for the Ferdinand Public Library project design.

The awards jury chose projects for outstanding design utilizing masonry units. Awards will be presented to representatives from Universal Design Associates, Inc. on Friday, November 16, 2012 at the Indiana Excellence in Masonry Awards Dinner.

“The use of masonry products on this project was a given; it was never a question,” says Gerald Schaeffer, project designer on the project. “The Library Board of Directors wanted a branch library building that was sustainable, as maintenance free as possible, and fit well with other buildings in the community.” The use of brick veneer, split-faced masonry block units, and limestone trim was a perfect fit for the landmark building. One of the favorite areas of the staff and patrons alike is the exterior story/reading area. This area is tiered down a hillside and paved with masonry landscape block and pavers to culminate in a mini amphitheater setting.

Gerald states, “As much as a library provides a foundation for a lifetime of knowledge and learning, the masonry incorporated into this project will provide this branch a solid structure that will serve as a foundation for many decades in the future.”

In 2011, Universal Design was also awarded the “Outstanding Design Award for Interiors” in the American School & University Magazine.
