A Mitchell man was pronounced dead at IU Health in Paoli after an ATV crash on a Martin County roadway near Orleans Sunday evening.

According to conservation officers, John Burbrink, 55, of Mitchell, had been operating an Arctic Cat ATV with a group of friends on County Road 750N, outside of Orleans, when he lost control of the ATV.

He was ejected from the ATV and it subsequently landed on top of him.

His fellow riders immediately began CPR but were unsuccessful in their attempts to revive him.

Burbrink was transported to the hospital by IU Paoli Ambulance.

The incident remains under investigation by Indiana Conservation Officers and an autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday morning in Bedford.

Assisting agencies at the scene included the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, Rural District 2 Fire Department, EMS Station 2, and the Orleans Police Department.

Burbrink was not wearing a helmet or any safety equipment.

Indiana Conservation Officers strongly encourage riders to always wear a helmet and necessary safety equipment when operating an ATV.
