Family seeking help to finish home after devastating fire

A Birdseye family is seeking monetary help to get back on their feet after a fire destroyed their home on October 5.

Meagan and Matthew Batson along with their three children, Dylan, 12, Brixon, 8, and Taegan, 6, lost everything in the fire that evening. Fortunately, Dylan was able to save his sleeping siblings and the family’s pets while getting help for the fire.

Dylan was recently honored by the Ferdinand American Legion Auxiliary with the Youth Hero Award for his actions that evening. In the photo, Ferdinand Unit 124 President Brenda Gramelspacher and Eighth District President Jocelyn Curtis are presenting Dylan with the award. According to his mom, Dylan said he doesn’t really feel like a hero; he just did what had to be done.

Here is a story about that incident.

Since then, the Batsons have been living in a camper on their property. They received a mobile home as a donation from a local property owner and are now working to finish installing the new home.

They are raising money to help install water and electricity and finish the foundation for the mobile home. Since the October fire, the family has worked to demolish the fire-damaged home and prepare the property for the donated home.
