Family Roots Nursery’s ‘Poinsettias with a Purpose’ brings beauty to area nursing home seniors

Family Roots Nursery is asking the public to “adopt a senior” this Christmas for $10 as part of its ‘Poinsettias with a Purpose’ campaign. Sponsorships pay for poinsettias for residents of area nursing homes and assisted living facilities. For each $10 sponsorship, the nursery donates a second poinsettia, so one sponsorship reaches two residents.

Sponsorships are available through Dec. 18. The nursery will deliver the plants during the week of Dec. 21 at no extra charge.

“We started this program six years ago because we wanted to find a simple way to spread kindness during the Christmas season,” co-owner Andrea Peters said in a news release.

Peters said a single plant can mean more than people expect.

“For some of these residents, it may be the only unexpected Christmas gift they receive,” she said.

The nursery works with participating facilities to choose residents who may benefit most. That includes people with little family nearby and people who seldom get visitors. [EDITOR’S NOTE: The release doesn’t name the participating facilities. Ask which ones, and whether any are in Dubois County.]

Sponsors can also send a poinsettia to a specific resident by giving that person’s name and facility when they order.

This year the nursery is asking local businesses to sponsor several residents at once. The match applies to those sponsorships too. A $100 sponsorship sends poinsettias to 20 residents, and a $500 sponsorship reaches 100.

“As small business owners, we understand the importance of giving back to the communities that support us throughout the year,” Peters said.

How to sponsor

  • Online: Buy through the Family Roots Nursery website and select “Pickup” at checkout. The nursery will handle delivery. [EDITOR’S NOTE: Need URL. Also confirm the “Pickup” step. It reads like a contradiction.]
  • Venmo: Send payment to @aapeters104 with “Adopt a Senior” in the memo.
  • In person: Visit the nursery in Dale.
  • By mail: Send checks payable to Family Roots Nursery Inc., 4781 W. 1200 S., Dale, IN 47523.

People who would rather deliver a poinsettia themselves can buy one at the nursery as a cash-and-carry gift.
