Event at Patoka Refuge ‘Walk on the Wild Side’
Come wander the woods of one of the more recent land acquisitions of the Patoka River National Wildlife Refuge on April 25th at 9:00 am CDT.
Rather than a hike, this walk is intended to be an exploration of this newly acquired property. We will begin with a brief explanation of land acquisition within the Refuge boundaries.
This property offers both upland and lowland habitats with an abundance of native trees and wildflowers. There are also water features, which include creeks, wetlands, and oxbows from the original Patoka River.
There are no trails so be prepared to dodge branches and step over fallen trees and limbs. Proper clothing, hiking shoes, and insect repellent are strongly advised. Feel free to bring binoculars and cameras. The distance covered will be approximately 1-1/2 miles at an easy pace.
Come breathe in nature and exhale joy as you walk on the wild side.
Directions: Starting at the Arthur Junction at the intersection of SR 64 and SR 61, take SR 61 W towards Arthur. Go about 2 miles and turn right on to 364 E. Continue about 4 miles to the Pike State Forest. At the “Y” in the park, veer left and take the gravel road 650 E. Go about 2 more miles to the grassy parking area on the left. There will be no walk if the weather is inclement.
