Eugene A. Verkamp, 69

Eugene A. Verkamp, 69, Ferdinand, died Tuesday, Nov. 3. 2015, at his home.
He was born in Ferdinand on July 28, 1946, to Albert and Augusta (Krampe) Verkamp. He married Phyllis Schlachter on May 24, 1986, on the family farm.
Mr. Verkamp was a retired carpenter and superintendent at Seufert Construction Company. He was a member of St. Ferdinand Parish and its St. Joseph’s Sodality. He was a lifetime member of the Ferdinand Community Center and the St. Anthony Conservation Club. He coached fifth- and sixth-grade girls basketball at Ferdinand Elementary School for 15 years. He was owner and operator of Beagles & Bunnies and trained beagles for many years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, making wine, the outdoors and his grandchildren.
Surviving are his wife, Phyllis Verkamp; two sons, Neil Verkamp and John Fleig and wife Rebecca, both of Ferdinand; two daughters, Becky Seng and husband Steve of Dubois and Elizabeth “Ebby” Weyer and husband Nick of Ferdinand; two brothers, Joseph Verkamp of Jasper and Dennis Verkamp and wife Camille of Mooresville; four sisters, Mary Ann Verkamp and husband Paul Brown of Indianapolis, Carol Burger and husband Ted of Fairland, Ruth Wibbels and husband John of Jasper and Rachel Hurm and husband Roger of Rockport; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his stepmother, Lauretta Verkamp.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Henry Catholic Church in St. Henry. Burial will be in St. Ferdinand Catholic Church Cemetery in Ferdinand.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday and 7 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Becher Funeral Home in Ferdinand.
