Esther F. Schepers, 100

Esther F. Schepers, 100 of Jasper, passed away at 9:45 p.m., Wednesday (October 10, 2012) at Northwood Retirement Community in Jasper.
Esther was born on November 15, 1911 in Dubois, IN to George and Theresia (Hasenour) Schepers.
She was an elementary school teacher for 46 years. She taught for 14 years in Dubois, Indiana, 10 years at Lake Village Consolidated Schools, Indiana, and 22 years at Riley and Knapp School in Michigan City, Indiana.
She received both her B.S. and Masters Degrees from Indiana State University. She received the “Second Mile and then Some” award in 1977 and was inducted into the Michigan City Area School’s “Hall of Fame” in 1983.
She was a member of Queen of all Saints Church in Michigan City, and the Rosary Sodality and Catholic Women’s Study Club at church.
She was a member and past president of Childhood Education Association (CEA), a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Teaching Sorority, the NEA, the Classroom Teachers Association, the Retired Teachers Association, and an honorary member of Friends of the Library at Michigan City, IN.
After retirement she became very active in the “Reading is Fundamental” program. She worked in this for 17 years at five elementary schools. She also conducted enrichment programs for first graders at Knapp and Jay Schools at Michigan City, IN.
She enjoyed knitting, various crafts, and was an avid reader.

Funeral services for Esther Schepers will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday,( October 12, 2012) at St Raphael Catholic Church in Dubois, IN. , with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
Friends may call from 10:00a.m. until the 11:00a.m. service time at the church.
