Elmer J. Meyer, 82, of Celestine, passed away at 5:00 a.m. on Monday, July 21, 2014, at home.

Elmer was born on August 17, 1931 in Ferdinand, IN to Frank and Frances (Eversman) Meyer. He married Doris Schnell on June 27, 1953 in St. Celestine Catholic Church in Celestine, Indiana.

Elmer was the Superintendant of the Jasper Novelty Plant #3 for 27 years. He also worked at Jasper Seating and retired from Executive Furniture in 1993. He was a member of St. Celestine Catholic Church. He served in the Indiana National Guard for 9 years.

He served on the steering committee to form the Celestine Fire Department, and was a Charter member of the Celestine Volunteer Fire Department, where he also served on the Board of Directors and was a first responder.

He was a Charter Member and served as the second president of the Celestine Community Club. He served on the Celestine Quasqui-Centennial Committee.

He was an honorary member of the Celestine Jaycees, and was instrumental in bringing street lights to Celestine.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, and was an avid fan of IU basketball, the St. Louis Cardinals, and the Indianapolis Colts and Pacers.

He is survived by his wife, Doris Meyer of Celestine; two daughters, Mary Geralyn Nordhoff and her husband Gary, of Celestine and Suzanne Krampe and her husband Steve, of Ferdinand; one son, Roger Meyer and his wife Theresa, of Celestine; daughter-in-law, Deb Meyer-Benton and her husband John, of Celestine; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, one step great-grandchild; one brother, Frank “Jackson” Meyer of Ferdinand.

Preceding him in death was one son, Randall Lee Meyer; two sisters, Theresa Meyer and Florentine Lasher; and one brother, Herbert Meyer.

Funeral services for Elmer J. Meyer will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 25, 2014, at St. Celestine Catholic Church in Celestine, Indiana, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The St. Anthony American Legion Post #493 will conduct Military graveside rites.

Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. on Thursday, July 24, 2014, at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper, and one hour before services at the church on Friday. The Indiana Volunteer Fire Fighters Association will conduct a memorial service at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Celestine Catholic Church, the Celestine Volunteer Fire Department, or to a favorite charity.
