Elizabeth C. Schmitt, 96, Ireland

Elizabeth C. Schmitt, 96, of Ireland, passed away at 7:15 p.m. on Monday, February 29, 2016, at home.

Elizabeth was born in St. Anthony, Indiana on August 15, 1919, to Wendel and Lena (Burke) Wagner. She married Othmar J. Schmitt on May 4, 1946, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in St. Anthony. He preceded her in death on February 10, 1987.

Elizabeth was a homemaker and member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ireland, St. Anne’s Society, the V.F.W. Auxiliary, and a lifetime member of the Ireland Sportsman Club.

She enjoyed sewing, quilting, and spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by four daughters, Mary Jane Schmitt of Ireland, Pat Durcholz and her husband LeRay of Ireland, Virginia Sermersheim and her husband Jerry of Jasper and Ann Fleck and her husband Glen of Ireland; five sons, Tom Schmitt and his wife Judy of Ireland, Ted Schmitt of Ireland, Ron Schmitt and his wife Bev of Ireland, Gene Schmitt and his wife Martha of Ireland and Alan Schmitt of Ireland; 22 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; four step great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Gruenke of Sheboygan, Wisc.

Preceding her in death besides her husband are one great-granddaughter, Cora Ann Fleck; one great-grandson, Carter Joseph Schmitt; one step-granddaughter, Shannon Sermersheim; one sister, Agnes Schmitt; and six brothers, Tony, Alois, Richard, Joe, and Maurice Wagner, and one who died in infancy.

Funeral services for Elizabeth C. Schmitt will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 5, 2016, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ireland, with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 12:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 4, 2016, at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper. The St. Ann’s Society will pray a rosary at 11:45 a.m. at the funeral home.
