Eight charges filed against man involved in deadly crash

The Evanston man charged in the vehicle crash that took the life of a Jasper resident and injured her two children last week was arraigned in Dubois County Superior Court on Tuesday.

According to the Dubois County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, Nathan Simpson, 37, faces eight charges from the crash that killed 36-year-old Dana Strohmeyer that occurred last Wednesday near the Holland Junction on State Road 64.

Those charges are the following:

  • Causing Death When Operating a Vehicle with a Schedule I or II Controlled Substance in the Blood, a Level 4 felony;
  • Causing Death When Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated, a Level 4 felony;
  • Causing Serious Bodily Injury when Operating a Vehicle with a Schedule I or II Controlled Substance in the Blood, a Level 5 felony;
  • Causing Serious Bodily Injury When Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated, a Level 5 felony;
  • Causing Serious Bodily Injury When Operating a Vehicle with a Schedule I or II Substance in the Blood, a Level 5 felony;
  • Causing Serious Bodily Injury when Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated, a Level 5 felony;
  • Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated Endangering a Person, a Class A misdemeanor; and
  • Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated, a Class C misdemeanor.

The State also filed a notice of intent to seek habitual offender status, which carries an additional fixed term of years, if proven.

Judge Anthony Quinn set bond at $100,000, cash-only, with enhanced pre-trial monitoring should he post that bond. Mr. Simpson is to have no contact with the victims in this case as a condition of bond.

*All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty
