Dubois County Museum reveals Schnellville Mural

On Sunday, the Dubois County Museum unveiled the latest mural in the Our Town collection.
The mural of Schnellville is the twelfth mural in the Our Town collection. It joins murals of Ferdinand, St. Henry/ Johnsburg, Holland, Ireland, Portersville, Celestine, Huntingburg, Dubois, Jasper, Haysville, and Birdseye. Artists Alice Kemper, Tom Schum, and Kim Schroeder have painted the murals.
Drawn on the mural are a cane mill, White City, butchering, the Wagon Wheel, Post Office and Telephone Exchange, Saloon–Brown Derby, five-Story Tobacco Barn, Schnellville School, Sacred Heart Church–brick and wooden churches, General Merchandise Store, Joseph Buchart Store, Buchart House and Wagon and Buggy Shop.
The town of Schnellville began when Henry Schnell set up a store there in 1864. He laid out and platted the town on November 27, 1865. Mr. Schnell was born in Germany in 1821, served in Company I, 49th Indiana Volunteers, where for four years he took part in the siege of Vicksburg and the Battle of Port Gibson, Champion Hill and others. He also served as County Commissioner and trustee for thirteen years.
The museum gift shop will have available postcards of the mural series and the newest mural’s postcard. Plaques made from the postcards are available as keepsakes from the gift shop.
The gift shop also has available for sale many historical books of Dubois County towns and cities.
The museum is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday from 10 to 4 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The Dubois County Museum is a local non-profit organization committed to the collection, preservation and interpretation of historical artifacts and information important to the citizens of the county. Museum operations are funded by annual memberships, donations and gifts from visitors, area residents and businesses. Admission is free; donations are accepted.
