Dubois County Memorial Day Cemetery observance schedules

The Dubois County Veterans Council announced Memorial Day observances at cemeteries throughout the county, with ceremonies scheduled for Sunday, May 24 and Monday, May 25.

Local veteran organizations will conduct these tributes to honor fallen and deceased veterans by placing flags on their graves. The Dubois County Council helps defray the costs of this effort by providing flags to the Veterans Council.

The public is encouraged to attend these ceremonies, which will take place at multiple locations across Dubois County.

On Saturday, May 23, the Dubois County Veterans Council and all veterans organizations will hold a countywide ceremony honoring all of our deceased veterans. The event will be held on the Square at the Dubois County Courthouse Veterans Memorial/POW/MIA Monument & Fountain from 10 to 11 a.m. Eastern Time. Patriotic Music, Ceremony Honoring All Deceased Veterans, Honor Guard and Firing Detail. Guest Speaker US Congressman Mark Messmer, Navy Club Ship 90 Ceremony, POW/MIA Display & Ceremony. Meal will follow at the Dubois County VFW Post 673 after the Ceremony, 11:15 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.

Here is the schedule for the cemetery ceremonies.

Sunday, May 24:  Holland American Legion Post 343 Memorial Day Services:  Selvin Cemetery 1:00 p.m. Holland Cemetery 1:30 p.m. Zoar Cemetery 2:00 p.m., Stendal Cemetery 2:30 p.m. Saint Paul Cemetery 3:00 p.m.  Augustana Cemetery 3:30 p.m. 

Sunday, May 24: Ferdinand American Legion Post 124 members, along with members of the Auxiliary, Sons of the Legion and VFW Post 11365, will host services following the 7:30 a.m. Mass at St. Henry Catholic Church in the church cemetery. A second service will be held at the Veterans’ Memorial on SR 162, north of Ferdinand, at about 9:15 a.m. All organizations will then attend the 10 a.m. Mass at St. Ferdinand Catholic Church followed by the final Veterans Remembrance Service near the church cemetery.

Monday, May 25: Jasper American Legion Post 147 and Dubois County VFW Post No. 673 Memorial Day Services: Fairview Cemetery at 9 a.m.; Shiloh Cemetery at 9:20 a.m.; St. Mary’s (Ireland) at 9:40 a.m.; St. John’s (Boone Twp.) at 10 a.m.; Portersville Cemetery at 10:20 a.m.; St. Paul’s (Haysville) at 10:40 a.m.; Hill Church at 11 a.m.; Crystal Cemetery at 11:20 a.m.;  St. Raphael’s (Dubois) 11:40 a.m.; Enlow Cemetery at 12:00 a.m.

Monday, May 25:  St. Anthony American Legion Post 493 Memorial Day Services: Mass @ St. Anthony 7:00 a.m.; St. Anthony Cemetery 8:00 a.m.  Celestine Cemetery 8:30 a.m.  Schellville Cemetery 9:00 a.m.  Meteor Cemetery 9:30 a.m.  Birdseye Cemetery 10:00 a.m.  Cox Cemetery 10:30 a.m.  Bretzville Cemetery 11:15 a.m.

Monday, May 25:  Huntingburg VFW Post 2366 Memorial Day Services:  St. Mary’s Catholic Church Cemetery 8:30 a.m.  Fairmount Cemetery 9:00 a.m.  Mayo Cemetery in Duff, 9:30 a.m. Veterans Memorial Park on 14th Street, Huntingburg, by the Event Center, 10:00 a.m.
