Dubois County mayoral election forums are planned

Vincennes University is joining with community organizations to conduct mayoral election forums in two Dubois County cities this fall.

The candidates for Mayor of Huntingburg will be featured in a forum on Oct. 11, 7:00 p.m. (EDT), in the Huntingburg Event Center. Janet Kemp, Democratic candidate, and Republican candidate Denny Spinner have agreed to participate. Joining with VU in sponsoring the Huntingburg forum are the Huntingburg Chamber of Commerce and the Kiwanis Club.

Jasper mayoral candidates will be presented on Oct. 12, 7:00 p.m., in the auditorium at the Jasper Arts Center. The agreement to participate has been signed by Democratic candidate John Burger and Republican candidate Terry Seitz. For this event, VU is partnering with the Jasper Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club.

At each forum the candidates will deliver a short speech to articulate their vision for the city during the upcoming four-year term of office and will explain their strategies to achieve that vision. Immediately following each speech the candidate will be interviewed on stage by a panel of local journalists.

In the second half of the program, all candidates will return to the stage to answer questions taken in writing from the audience and presented by a moderator. Response times will be limited and each candidate will be given two minutes at the end of the program for a closing statement.

The forum will be broadcast live on WITZ (104.7) and WBDC (100.9 FM) radio as well as WJTS TV27.

Residents can submit questions for consideration ahead of time on the following Facebook Pages.

Questions should involve the business and governance of the city. Questions of a personal nature will not be accepted.
