Tammy Humbert, the executive director of the Dubois County Emergency Management, issued a warning regarding open fires in the area.

Humbert stated that although there is not a burn ban currently in place, residents need to be aware that conditions are favorable for open burns to quickly get out of control.

“The ground and vegetation are very dry,” said Humbert in a press release. “These conditions make it extremely easy for controlled burns to get out of control very quick.”

She also issued a reminder to residents that burning trash is illegal in Indiana.

Residents are also required to notify the Dubois County Communications Center — 9-1-1 — if they are performing a controlled burn on their properties.

“The local fire department chiefs are currently monitoring the situation and if conditions continue to deteriorate, a burn ban could be issued very soon,” Humbert stated in regards to the warning. “Take all necessary precautions to prevent out of control fires.”
