Dubois County DAR meeting notes
Seventeen members of the Dubois County Chapter of NSDAR met at the Dubois County Museum on May 21. Regent Paula Book and Chaplain Pat Riley opened the meeting with the ritual. Member Liz Book led in the singing of the National Anthem. Treasurer Peg Wagner reported. Secretary Angie McDonald emailed minutes to members earlier.
Since the DAR year ends with the June meeting, membership chairperson Jenny LaGrange led the members through a planning session for the next year.
Items discussed were plans to do more for veterans, registering pollinator gardens online, the 19th Amendment, and creating an event to recognize new citizens locally.
NSDAR supports six schools in rural southern areas. Tamassee DAR School in South Carolina is both a children’s home and family services organization. There is an Indiana sponsored cottage to which chapters are encouraged to donate. Dubois County Chapter members are to bring Chick-fil-A gift cards to the June meeting. These will be placed in birthday cards which members will sign and Mrs. McDonald will mail to the Indiana cottage at Tamassee. Boys living in the Indiana cottage have expressed wanting these.
Regent Book and media chairperson Liz Book attended the Indiana DAR State Conference in Indianapolis May 17-19. Regent Book told of a presentation by a speaker who as a young child had been in need of foster care services. The speaker tried to have the audience understand how hard it would be to be taken to live with strangers, to adjust to new rules, and when the time came to leave, have your belongings put in a black garbage bag. As an adult, this woman purchases backpacks for foster children to use when they transition. She also advocates for recruiting people to be a CASA.
Regent Book shared with chapter members the twelve certificates Dubois County Chapter had been presented at the state conference. Linda Messmer, chairperson of the Constitution Week Committee, was acknowledged for work done.
Regent Book and Vice Regent Karen Adams announced that the Dubois County Chapter will host the Southwestern District NSDAR meeting in August of 2020. Members will be needed to help plan for and to work on that day.
The next meeting will be a carry-in dinner on June 18 at 6:00 P.M. at the home of Linda Messmer. Meat, drinks, and serving dishes will be provided. Members are to bring any side dish or dessert. Prospective members are welcome, also. Ed Messmer will present the lesson: Self Defense for Women.
