Dubois County councilman seeking nomination for Indiana Senate seat
Daryl Schmitt, currently serving as a Dubois County Councilman, has officially announced he is seeking nomination for the State Senate District 48 seat.

This position, currently held by State Senator Mark Messmer, will likely be vacated if he is elected to represent Congressional District 8. Once he steps down, a caucus of Republican precinct committee members from the six-county district (Gibson, Pike, Dubois, Perry, Spencer and Crawford) will be held to select a successor to complete the remaining two years of Messmer’s term in the State Senate.
Schmitt has formed an exploratory committee to navigate the caucus and is committed to continuing the strong representation District 48 has experienced over the past decade under Messmer’s leadership.
“I have been working hard to attend meetings, fairs, and festivals to better connect with and understand the constituents of District 48,” Schmitt stated. “My goal is to ensure that this district continues to receive the same level of representation and dedication that Senator Messmer has provided over the past ten years.”
A lifelong resident of Southern Indiana, Schmitt has deep roots in the community. He holds three degrees—two Associate’s in Finance and Business Administration and a Bachelor’s in Business Management—from Vincennes University and Indiana State University.
Schmitt began his career at UPS, where he advanced to a management role over seven years. Following this, he returned to his family farm as a fifth-generation farmer, a role he has cherished for the past 30 years, while also engaging in seed sales for the past 16 years.
For the past two years, Schmitt has devoted himself to serving as a Dubois County Councilman, working diligently to enhance the county’s development and prosperity. He is eager to bring his dedication and experience to the State Senate, aiming to make a positive impact at the state level.
