Dubois County Candidates forum (video)

The Jasper Chamber of Commerce, VUJ and local media partnered to provide a candidate forum for the local elections.

Thursday evening, candidates for county council-at-large and the Dubois Circuit Court judge fielded three questions prepared beforehand by the local media. They were asked these questions to give voters a chance to hear their personal views on some major areas of concern for the county.

An embedded Facebook Live video is provided below.

WJTS TV 18 will also air the Dubois County Candidates forum Monday, October 19, 2020, at 8:00 p.m. EST and again on Tuesday, October 20, 2020, at 10:00 a.m. EST. WJTS-TV is available with an antenna or on local cable TV providers. Tuesday morning the forum will be available at www.youtube.com/18WJTS.

Circuit Court Judge questions:

  1. In light of the majority of local crimes being drug-related (substance abuse related), how do you balance punitive measures and rehabilitative services in regards to those individuals committing the crimes?
  2. What do you feel is the role of a judge pertaining to organizations such as CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate), SWICACC (Southwestern Indiana Child Advocacy Center Coalition), Crisis Connection and others involving families and children?
  3. In light of the security center project – what changes do you think need to be made in the county’s justice system to make it better?

Council-at-Large questions:

  1. Explain how you would use local option income tax revenue — these taxes were previously known also referred to as County Option Income Tax and Economic Development Income Tax — and your opinion on how they should be used into the future.
  2. The primary function of the County Council is to serve as the county’s fiscal agent. Based on the projected budget shortfall over the next three years, what would you recommend regarding fiscal responsibility and creating or maintaining a balanced budget?
  3. There are several important issues affecting Dubois County either now or in the future. Choose one of the following to share your opinion: a. Do you think the Mid-States Corridor road is needed – – and do you support Dubois County providing future funding for this project? b. What is your opinion of the current plans for the court & justice system – – including its operations and funding?

Here is the video of the forum (starts about 4 minutes in).
