Driver in Ferdinand crash arrested with .44 BAC

Ferdinand Police arrested a driver involved in a crash on the town’s south side after tests indicated his blood alcohol content was .44.

Gary R. Riddle, 52, Santa Claus, was southbound on State Road 162 in a 2019 Toyota Tacoma at 6:17 p.m. waiting to turn left into the Wendy’s restaurant when his truck was struck from behind. A 1991 Ford Ranger driven by Jeremy E. Hammers, 46, of Ferdinand, had ran into Riddle’s truck.

After the collision, Riddle exited his vehicle to check on the others involved and called 911. A passenger in Hammers’ — identified as Keith Hammers, 67, Ferdinand — truck wasn’t wearing a seatbelt and had struck his head on the windshield.

During the investigation, police determined both men had been drinking. Indiana State Police transported driver Jeremy Hammers to Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center for testing.

Authorities booked Jeremy Hammers into the Dubois County Security Center on a Level 6 felony count of operating while intoxicated.

Police estimated damages to Riddle’s Toyota at about $2,500 and $1,000 to Hammers’ Ford.

The Ferdinand Volunteer Fire Department, Memorial Hospital Emergency Medical Services and a Berg’s Garage wrecker assisted.

  1. funny how as humans we decide what is a crisis and what isn’t. Government shuts down over a border that some claim is an existential crisis while a person dies every 50 minutes from drinking and driving. Doesn’t seem to add up does it?
