Donald Charles Skelton, 78, met his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Wednesday, May 27, 2015.

Don was born to Arvil (Jack) and Lillian nee Weisheit Skelton on April 12, 1937 in Elberfeld.

Don graduated from Mackie High School in 1955 and then from Evansville College in 1958. Don graduated from IU Law school and was admitted to the Bar in 1961. After law school he served with the Army National Guard. He then worked for the IRS as a criminal investigator. He worked in several cities across America during his career.

Don worked for the IRS for 20 years and retired in 1987. He and Barbara returned to Indiana. Don was blessed with a fulfilling retirement. He learned to downhill ski and enjoyed many skiing trips. He also enjoyed hiking, biking and even tried his hand at golf. He also found a blessing to work for the church by teaching vacation bible school. He and Barbara enjoyed traveling and were able to make many trips through the U.S. and other parts of the world.

Don always enjoyed the violin so much that at age 68 he decided to take violin lessons. He did very well and played at his violin teachers wedding and at church numerous times. Don also taught three students.

At age 74, Don was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) He participated in an ALS Study Project at IU for a year but the project was stopped because they were not getting the results they hoped for. Don was upbeat and had a wonderful sense of humor during this difficult illness.

Don decided he would donate his brain to the IU Research Center for Alzheimer and ALS.

Don is survived by his wife of 52 plus years, Barbara nee Ris Skelton; ten siblings, Allen Skelton (Martha) of Benton, Ill., Jerry Skelton of Outer Banks, N.C., Bill Skelton (Leda) of Lynnville, Marge Skelton of Boonville, Marilyn Skelton of Elberfeld, Marti Skelton of Denver, Colo., Karen Cross (David) of Indianapolis, Steve Skelton of Elberfeld, Glen Skelton (Nancy) Valparaiso, and Dennis Skelton (Kelly) of Elberfeld. Don is also survived by four nieces, nine nephews, one great-niece and eight great-nephews.

 

Visitation will be Friday May 29, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Dale United Methodist Church.

Funeral Services are planned for Saturday May 30, at 10 a.m. at the Dale United Methodist. Interment will follow at Providence Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Somerville.
