Display honors Indiana veterans who have died since 9/11
“We want to keep the memory of those who have died in defense of our country alive,” Tina Moriarty, Junior Vice Commandant of the Southern Indiana Leathernecks who also serves on the Dubois County Veterans Council said.
“We don’t want them forgotten. We want their families to know that we recognize this is a struggle and we are still remembering them,” she said.
To do so, the Dubois County Veterans Council is bringing the traveling photo exhibit featuring more than 100 Indiana men and women who have died in combat since September 11 to Dubois County.
Remembering Our Fallen will be on display at the Indiana National Guard Armory, 1481 Bartley Street, from Thursday, September 22 through Sunday, September 25. The display is open from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday; 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday; and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.
An opening ceremony is planned for Wednesday, September 21 at 7 p.m. It is open to the public.
This is the first time the display has been in Dubois County. It features two local Marines that died while serving; Marine Cpl. Eric Lueken died in 2006 in Iraq and Marine Lance Cpl. Alec Terwiske died in Afghanistan in 2012. Both men were from Dubois.
According to Moriarty, an individual in the community contacted her about the display after they had viewed it.
Dubois County is very patriotic,” Moriarty said. “People are very good at supporting the families and troops here.”
Indiana is one of 20 states that has a Remembering Our Fallen war memorial. The first display was created by Bill and Evonne Williams of Omaha, Nebraska. After the display was unveiled, Bellevue University asked the couple if they would be interested in doing this in other states. It has spread and more states are expected to create displays of their own. www.rememberingourfallen.org
In conjunction with the display, the Indiana National Guard will have an open house and 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, September 24. The run will start from the armory at 9 a.m. During the open house, visitors will be able to view the wall and talk to soldiers at the armory.
